چکیده

Abstract We study parallel online algorithms: For some fixed integer k , a collective of processes that perform decisions on the same sequence events forms - copy algorithm . any given time and input sequence, overall performance is determined by best individual total results. Problems this type have been considered for makespan minimization; they are also related to optimization with advice future events, i.e., number bits available in advance. Parallel algorithms interest practical scenarios which redundancy used hedging against undesired outcomes. develop Predictive Harmonic $$_3$$ 3 (PH3), relatively simple family -copy Bin Packing Problem, whose joint competitive factor converges 1.5 increasing In particular, we show $$k=6$$ k = 6 suffices guarantee 1.5714 PH3, better than 1.57829, known 1-copy Advanced while $$k=11$$ 11 achieve 1.5406, beating lower bound 1.54278 single algorithm. context advice, our approach implies 4 suffice 1.54278, considerably less previous 15 bits.

Online algorithms with advice for the dual bin packing problem

This paper studies the problem of maximizing the number of items packed into n bins, known as the dual bin packing problem, in the advice per request model. In general, no online algorithm has a constant competitive ratio for this problem. An online algorithm with 1 bit of advice per request is shown to be 3/2-competitive. Next, for 0 < ε < 1/2, an online algorithm with advice that is (1/(1− ε)...

Parallel Approximation Algorithms for Bin Packing

We study the parallel complexity of polynomial heuristics for the bin packing problem. We show that some well-known (and simple) methods like first-fit-decreasing are P-complete, and it is hence very unlikely that they can be efficiently parallelized. On the other hand, we exhibit an optimal NC algorithm that achieves the same performance bound as does FFD. Finally, we discuss parallelization o...

Comparing online algorithms for bin packing problems

The relative worst-order ratio is a measure of the quality of online algorithms. In contrast to the competitive ratio, this measure compares two online algorithms directly instead of using an intermediate comparison with an optimal offline algorithm. In this paper, we apply the relative worst-order ratio to online algorithms for several common variants of the bin packing problem. We mainly cons...

Branch-and-price algorithms for the dual bin packing and maximum cardinality bin packing problem

There appear to be two versions of the Dual Bin Packing problem in the literature. In addition, one of the versions has a counterpart in the cutting stock literature, known as the Skiving Stock Problem. This paper outlines branch-andprice algorithms for both. We introduce combinatorial upper bounds and well-performing heuristics from the literature in the branch-and-price framework. Extensive c...

Bin Packing Problem: Two Approximation Algorithms

The Bin Packing Problem is one of the most important optimization problems. In recent years, due to its NP-hard nature, several approximation algorithms have been presented. It is proved that the best algorithm for the Bin Packing Problem has the approximation ratio 3/2 and the time orderO(n), unlessP=NP. In this paper, first, a -approximation algorithm is presented, then a modification to FFD ...
